Shipping Peptides in Hot Weather: What Happens to Lyophilized Peptides in Transit
Lyophilized peptides are shipped dry because dry powder tolerates a few days at room temperature far better than a solution does. Heat still speeds up degradation, so transit time and what you do on arrival both matter. This post explains the chemistry and the practical steps.

Why peptides ship as dry powder
Most degradation reactions in peptides, such as Deamidation, Oxidation and Hydrolysis, need water to proceed at any speed. Freeze-drying removes most of it, leaving a low Residual moisture powder that is far more stable than the same peptide in solution.
What heat does
Higher temperature speeds up every one of those reactions, and the effect compounds with time. A few days in a warm truck is a very different exposure from weeks on a sunny shelf. Stability data for a specific peptide, where published, is the only firm answer; in general the larger risk is a long transit, not a short one.
Moisture matters as much as temperature
Lyophilized powder is Hygroscopic. The main arrival risk is opening a cold vial in warm, humid air, which lets Condensation (on cold vials) form on the powder. Let a vial reach room temperature before opening it, and keep it sealed until then.
What to do when a package arrives
- Unpack promptly: do not leave the box in a mailbox or on a porch longer than needed.
- Inspect: check seals and the appearance of the powder (see what to check on arrival).
- Store: move sealed vials to the stated storage condition, usually frozen around -20°C and protected from light.
- Log it: note arrival date and condition. The free Peptide Lab Handbook has a printable log.
How we ship
Orders ship from Michigan by USPS Priority Mail, usually within 1 business day of payment when in stock, so transit is typically a few days. Combining items into one order means one shipment instead of several; orders over $199.99 ship free, and volume pricing applies to multiple vials of a size. Compare sizes with the price per mg calculator.
